[NEW!] Gong Cha transforms into LiHO: Local Brand, New Menu and CHEESE TEA?! Wed, 31 May 2017 05:35:43 +0000 Yes you heard it right, and have probably seen some of the outlets changed. All Gong Cha outlets in Singapore will be rebranded into a local brand named LiHO, introducing a new drink concept – Cheese Tea! Instead of milk froth, their signature Cheese Tea and Cheese Smoothie comes with a layer of cheese froth above the drink. Cheese Tea originated from China few years ago, and has become extremely popular there with multiple brands offering cheese tea. LiHO is the first to bring this concept to the shores of Singapore. Those who stay true to Gong Cha don’t worry; LiHO still serve classic milk teas, brewed teas and you can still add-on toppings such as ai yu jelly as well as choose your sugar level and ice level.

LiHO Menu 01
LiHO Menu 02

The Drinks

Cheese Froth

CHEESE JING SYUAN TEA (Cost: M – $4.10/L – $5.10) The creamy cheese froth is like a saltier version of the Gong Cha milk froth. We preferred to mix the cheese into the tea before drinking, but you can drink it as it is if you want to. All teas are served with a special lid where there are 2 holes; one is for the straw to go through whereas the other is a resealable hole for sipping onto the cheese tea.

If you don’t like or can’t take cheese products, there is a whole list of non-cheese drinks available for you! On the left is their signature non-cheese tea: LIHO ROYAL MILK GUAN YIN (Cost: M – $3.50/L – $4.50) which is brewed from 鐵觀音(Tie Guan Yin/Iron Goddess) a premium variety of Chinese Oolong Tea, with a layer of creamy milk froth atop it.

If you want something refreshing, try the GOLDEN YUZU GREEN TEA (Cost: M – $3.40/L – $4.40) on the right. Light and soothing with a hint of citrus yuzu taste to it, and it is one of the more well received drink.

[NEW!] Guenpin Fugu @ Tanjong Pagar, Maxwell Road Mon, 08 May 2017 03:50:26 +0000 Ever tried before PUFFERFISH? Now you can at Guenpin Fugu Singapore, a new Japanese restaurant that brings you Torafugu (Tiger Puffer Fish) and snow crab dishes in a 32-seater cozy restaurant setting located at Maxwell Chambers (Tanjong Pagar)!

About the restaurant: Guenpin Fugu is Japan’s largest Fugu restaurant chain with 96 outlets, and now this outlet in Singapore is their first ever outlet to be opened outside of Japan! Guenpin Fugu is helmed by Chef Tomita, who has 30 years of experience in handling fugu cuisines; So don’t worry you are in safe hands.

Before the fish can be air-flown to Singapore from Japan, all the poisonous parts of the fish are removed and cleaned by qualified chefs. These fish are also strictly checked and authorised by AVA Singapore before it can be served in Singapore.

Torafugu is considered the highest grade of fugu in Japan, and it contains rich amounts of collagen and protein as well as lesser fats and calories. This means it is a great dish for beauty and health and it is also the most prestigious type of pufferfish to be consumed in Japan.

The Menu and Pricing:

At Guenpin Fugu, you can either dine on A la carte menu or you can go for their course dish such as the puffer fish course, snowcrab course or the ultimate Zeitaku course.

    Cost: $168/person

Zeitaku course is the ultimate 9-course dining at Guenpin Fugu, where you will be able to enjoy most of the items this restaurant has to offer. Below is a rundown of what you will expect from this course menu:

A la carte cost: $14.00
First we have the starters; a small bowl of thinly sliced puffer fish skin with scallions and daikon seasoned with their ponzu sauce. The skin feels jelly-like, you can taste the freshness of the fish which is further enhanced by the sauce. A delightful start to a long meal.

A la carte cost: $28.00
Next is Guenpin Fugu’s signature dish, thinly sliced torafugu sashimi! Torafugu fish meat is known to be thicker than usual, therefore it is sliced so thinly. It has a much more chewy texture and it is mildly-tasted, hence it is served with ponzu sauce which gives it a citrus feel.

A la carte cost: $32.00
The thick slices are typically rarely found as the making process is quite complex in order to make it soft enough. This involves a patented technique known as aging process and the resultant texture becomes perfectly soft and much pleasing chewiness.

A la carte cost: $32.00
This crab meat is very unlike the usual ones  from elsewhere as the snow crab flesh is extremely soft and rich in taste. It is served in a peeled state and you can eat it with ease. Likewise, this sashimi tastes great with ponzu sauce.

A la carte cost: $32.00
The tempura dish consists of snow crab, mushrooms and long beans delightfully fried to the perfect tempura state. Just like the usual tempura, consume with tempura sauce and it tastes just perfect! The meat is soft and easy to eat too!

A la carte cost: $48.00
For this dish, the food will be brought to your table and masterfully grilled by the chef. Extra detail to precision is given to ensure the meats are grilled for a duration just nice without it sticking to the grill. The grilled fugu still has its chewiness with the tasty grilled essence. The grilled snow crab meat is so soft that it melts in your mouth with fragrance. This grill dish comes with three different dipping sauces: sweet miso, chili and minced garlic.

A la carte cost: $55.00
The chef will come over to cook this as well! The hotpot is served with a bowl of dipping ponzu sauce mixture. The fugu fish and snow crab are mixed in with a variety of vegetables and glass noodles to cook. The nice and soft cooked items tastes just heavenly with the ponzu dippings. This is perhaps one of those dishes that makes you eat non-stop. (Hint: it’s really due to the ponzu sauce)

A la carte cost: $12.00
You need to have consumed the hotpot dish to have the porridge. The chef will use the fragrant soup left from the fugu hotpot to make the porridge, with added salt and egg. This porridge is to be eaten with the ponzu sauce as well. The resultant taste is a good mix of components of seafood and egg fragrance with the ponzu kick! Eating porridge can be this joyful too!

Finally, there will be ice cream desserts to end the meal with.

We were given some Japanese sake to go with our course, and this particular award winning sake, ATAGONOMATSU TOKEBETSU JYUNMAI (Cost: $250/1.8L bottle) is rather smooth and lacks that burning sensation that you would get from certain alcohol. A drink that is nice to have with this fine dinner.

    Cost: $19.90

The large rice bowl is combined with all the great tasty tempura items including the epic fugu kaki-age, prawn and crab. This set also comes with soup and vegetable sides. It is the most worth it lunch set with the delightful taste! Only available during lunchtime.

Eating pufferfish and having Japanese fine dining is something that we will not normally do, so we felt very privileged to be able to taste this delicacy and have this experience. Visit this restaurant if you are ready to try out these exotic seafood from Japan!
