There has been a number of Japanese restaurants and cafes opening in Singapore recently, from 1 Michelin Star Ramen to LeTAO and their famous fromage cheesecakes and now, Hattendo and their famous soft cream buns from Hiroshima! Located just in front of Japan Rail Cafe at Tanjong Pagar Centre, Singapore’s Hattendo Cafe offers 5 flavours – custard, whipped cream, matcha, azuki beans, and chocolate. These buns run out very fast, so be sure to check with them on the availability or you may want to go there earlier. They will also announce if the buns are sold out on their Facebook page.
Other than buns, they have mason jar salads with unlimited bun croutons and original coffee that is blended by Itsuki Coffee, a speciality coffee shop on Miyajima Island, Hiroshima.
Note: Their last batch of cream buns are released at 6pm daily.

Unfortunately, the whipped cream flavour is sold out just when it comes to our turn (we arrived 1 hour after the release of 6pm batch, so be sure to go really early!). Apparently it is the most well received flavour, followed by custard.
As we unveil what is under the paper wrappers, we find that the buns are so soft to the touch that it feels like breaking apart if we put too much pressure to it. It looks like a simple round shaped bun from under-the-block bakeries, but don’t be deceived, right inside the bun is a generous amount of very smooth and chilled cream that is pleasantly fragrant and delicious!
We started with the matcha flavour, which has a little bitterness in it reflecting the quality Japanese green tea used. The chocolate flavour is the whipped chocolate cream type, lighter in choco taste. We liked the azuki bean (red bean paste) flavour, which contains not just the cream, but has bits of red bean in it too. Lastly the custard flavour which we also liked, is super creamy and sweet.
