[NEW!] Japan Rail Cafe @ Tanjong Pagar Centre

The January special is out now! Do check out our post for more information!

Japan enthusiasts rejoice! A Japan travel themed cafe has opened in Singapore at Tanjong Pagar Centre! Managed by JR East (A railway company in Japan), Japan Rail Cafe offers food and drinks, rail ticketing service, travel information and a small retail area. We were impressed by the setting of the cafe, it feels very welcoming and has a relaxing ambience. If you want a nice place to chill out and relax after work, this is the place to be.

For those who are travelling to Japan, or are interested to do so can come down to this cafe, where you can find very useful information about the regions of Japan and its railway system. You can even order train tickets here at your convenience!

[NOW – 6 Jan 2017] The month of December region theme in the cafe is ‘Tohoku東北’, a region situated in the northeastern part of Honshu, Japan, south of Hokkaido. Information about the region of Tohoku can be found in the Japan Rail Times paper, magazines and brochures that are available in the cafe.

‘Eki naka’ in Japan literally means inside train station, and it refers to the shops and departmental stores that can be found within train stations. At the cafe, there is a small retail area where you can find merchandises from Japan’s eki naka stores.

The Food:

    Cost: $18.00

You can choose 1 main dish (Stir-fry pork in sweet ginger sauce/Deep fried oysters) and 1 side dish (Fried egg/Crab cream croquette/Stir-fried butter scallops) to accompany the curry rice. We liked the fragrance of the curry, and it is especially good when eaten with just the rice itself. Some salad with dressing on the side balances well with the flavour of the dish. A perfect savoury dish for a cold or rainy day.

    Cost: $18.00

Donburi with raw sashimi, scallops, ikura (fish roe) and avocado. The additional toppings that comes separated from the dish (from left to right) are seaweed, mentaiko and sesame seeds, and are for you to add if you want. You have a choice of either original or dashi soup, which you can pour into the donburi to make it into an Ochazuke dish! It is a well-balanced and fresh dish that is very popular among the ladies in Japan, and we recommend this if you are finding a healthier choice for a meal.

Cost: $6.50, FREE when ordered with the weekly menu

We chose this because of its interestingly long name, and we learned that Kuromitsu means black honey, and Kinako means soybean powder. So combine these with milk coffee, and we have a very strong and sweet caffeine drink for you latte lovers.
